Duplex stainless steels feature a dual-phase microstructure consisting of both austenite and ferrite. This "best of both worlds" chemistry provides double the strength of standard austenitic stainless steels (like 316L) along with exceptional resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. The forging process is critical here to ensure the 50/50 phase balance is maintained, preventing the formation of brittle intermetallic phases.

  • Ferrite Content Testing: Always request a "Ferrite Scope" test or metallurgical lab report to verify the ferrite percentage is between 35% and 65%.
  • Corrosion Testing: For offshore use, specify ASTM G48 Method A testing to ensure the forging can resist pitting in ferric chloride solutions.
  • Surface Passivation: Ensure the forgings are properly pickled and passivated after machining to restore the protective chromium oxide layer.
