Butt weld fittings—including elbows, tees, and reducers—are used in larger piping systems (usually 2" and above) where the fitting is welded end-to-end with the pipe. While many butt-weld fittings are made from wrought pipe, forged butt-weld fittings are used when extreme wall thicknesses or specialized materials are required. Forging ensures that the fitting has a completely uniform grain structure, which is critical for the high-temperature and high-pressure environments of power plants and offshore platforms.

  • Schedule Matching: The fitting's wall thickness (schedule) must perfectly match the pipe it is being welded to (e.g., Sch 160) to avoid "mismatch" at the root of the weld.

  • Heat Treatment: For P91 or high-alloy fittings, verify that the post-forging heat treatment was performed correctly to ensure the creep-strength properties are intact.
